Know your floors. White oak and red oak will look different when the same stains are applied to them. That's just the nature of wood. Definitely know what type of floor you are working with! If you like a stain but something still feels off, you can mix it with other stains to get the right look. That's what we ended up doing (more on that below).

3. Minwax Golden Pecan. We chose to experiment with this stain color because of its mid-range tint with red undertones. The pine board looked the least natural with this stain. Poplar looked a little bit like watermelon. Birch did surprisingly well and the oaks were naturals. Naturals in a very red way. 4.

Green is the opposite of red on the color wheel, so apparently when applied to red oak flooring, it theoretically should neutralize the pink/orange tones and leave you with a beautiful brown rather than enhancing the red. It seemed kinda crazy - obviously I didn't want green floors.

We took fruitwood stain and continued to add a dark stain (similar to walnut) to it until we achieved a warm brown rather than a gold/brown or red/brown.
